The countries name Panama comes from an indigenous word that translates to “abundance of fish.” The Panama Canal, which was completed in 1914, is one of the most famous engineering feats in the world, and attracts millions of visitors each year. The canal is now a contender for the ‘eighth wonder of the world’. The country has a diverse landscape, ranging from tropical rainforests to highlands and deserts.

It’s a prime place for birdwatching, with over 970 bird species recorded in the country. Some of the most sought-after species include the ersplendent quetzal, the harpy eagle, and the blue cotinga.
The country is comprised of 1,500+ islands, many of which are uninhabited. Some of the most popular islands for tourism include Bocas del Toro, San Blas, and Contadora.
