Birthplace of George Washington

The birthplace of George Washington is nestled along the Potomac near Colonial Beach. This farm was established in the mid-17th century as a colonial tobacco plantation by Englishman John Washington.  The farm has also carried the names of  Popes Creek Plantation and Wakefield.  On February 22, 1732, George Washington is born and is the first of six children  born to Augustine and Mary Ball Washington. He would also had additional siblings as his father Augustine had three additional children from a previous marriage.

The plantation has livestock and a winding trail down to the waterfront.  Spend  1/2 of a  day walking around the 538 acres touring the buildings and period garden.  The grounds are kept in immaculate condition and is worth the drive to experience the history.   The original house structure  built by Augustine was destroyed by fire in 1779.  The foundation the building has been unearthed along with other side buildings on the property.  Besides being the first President of the United States he was the first mule breeder here.  For those who are not familiar with country talk mules are a mix of horse and donkey.  He believed that mules were instrumental in driving agriculture for the southern region.  There is a cemetery on the property where George Washington’s father, grandfather, and great-grandfather are laid to rest.
