Accokeek

George Mason I was the great-grandfather of the famous George Mason settled on a hill by Accokeek Creek. He named his plantation, “Accokeek.”  Mason’s Accokeek Plantation nearly doubled to 1,150 acres from 650.

Fun fact George III served as colonel in the county’s militia  and was a part of the House of Burgesses (lower house of the colonial Virginia legislature.) This group of men were important because it was the first legislative and democratic government in America.

The battle in the civil ware park is known as “the Union Army’s Valley Forge” during a brutal winter following a defeat at Fredericksburg.
