The birthplace of James Monroe

James Monroe is one of my favorite presidents.  Some of the notable events of this term were: – Congress fixed 13 as the number of stripes on the flag to honor the original 13 colonies – The boundary between the U.S. and Canada was fixed at the 49th parallel – Spain ceded Florida to the United States in exchange for the cancellation of five million dollars in Spanish debt – The Missouri Compromise admitted Missouri as a slave state, but forbade slavery in any states carved from the Louisiana Territory north of 36 degrees, 30 minutes latitude. Monroe’s administration had been one of high idealism and integrity and his personal popularity was at an all-time high by the end of his first term in office. He was nearly unopposed for reelection, carrying every state and receiving every electoral vote cast – with the exception of one, cast by a New Hampshire elector for John Quincy Adams. source

At the youthful age of 16 he inherited the property after the death of his mother and father.  He withdrew from school to assist his the care of his siblings with the assistance of his uncle Joseph Jones.  He had four siblings, one sister, Elizabeth, and three brothers, Spence, Andrew Augustine, and Joseph Jones. He went on to marry Elizabeth and have 3 children Eliza Monroe Hay, James Spence Monroe was born in 1799 and died sixteen months later and Maria Hester Monroe. Maria was the first child to a President to be married in the White House.

The remains of the estate and a replica of the house sit in front of the interpretive timeline of his life.  There are picnic tables in the shade located across the way by the visitors center.
